Womens'
Magazines 1750 - 1950
These
magazines illustrate the changing interests of women through various eras.
My stock of magazines contains single issues and bound yearly, or half-yearly,
volumes in English and French, and sometimes in other languages. Many
pre 1900 women's magazines have hand-coloured fashion plates and some
also have needlework designs.
Some
magazines are grand and expensive, for women with servants and plenty
of leisure, other later ones, intended for housewives who must do their
own housework, cookery and sewing, have practical advice. The most useful
of the few books on the history of women's magazines are Alison Adburgham's
"Women in Print" and Vyvyan Holland's "Hand Coloured Fashion Plates 1770-1899".
